We are on holiday in North America and our tour started in Seattle where we visited some friends from the UK. They organised an amazing food tour for us at Pike Place Market.
Pike Place Chowder Kitchen was a small but busy restaurant where people stand in line for an hour to taste their delicious chowder. It was my first time trying chowder as it isn’t very popular in the UK. It was first originated New England and now is a staple dish in the US. It is a creamy stew with small chunks of bacon, onion and potatoes in it. However we were told chowder can have basically anything you want in it. It was so rich and delicious and perfectly seasoned.
Indi Chocolate was deep in the market and had authentic chocolate made from beans from Guatemala. I was given the opportunity to see how the chocolate was made and all the different parts of the cacao bean. We tried their dark chocolate chip cookies with cacao nibs on top which gave a nutty and bitter taste to combat the sweet chocolate.
After Indi Chocolate we were off to Land of Origin to try their beef pies. Land of Origin was an African inspired stall with a variety of options from all over Africa. It wasn’t what I was expecting when I thought of beef pies but I was pleasantly surprised. It was less crispy than a British pie and more doughy but was served with a spicy jalapeño salsa. It really shined through as the it provided spice and a citrus flavour as it was clear some lime has been added.
Finally my favourite dish of the day was the smoked shoulder of pork served with a dollop of coleslaw on top. Being British I have always been envious of the barbecue culture over in America. They all manage to create such tender meat and have perfect seasoning. This was no exception. In this small pot there was pork shoulder hidden under the coleslaw. The coleslaw was very fresh and not been drenched in mayonnaise meaning the veg was still crunchy underneath. The shoulder was smokey with a barbecue rub which paired perfectly.
